Although Reifman does all sorts of music production, underground hip hop has been his main focus. Reifman wants to be known for san diego beat production and will be looking to work with many new artists soon. Errol and Touch of CAS plan to continue the great chemistry with more great hip hop to be released in 2011. Errol Reifman will be dropping another instrumental album soon too! This amazed me due to the fact that most live acts were rock based music. This is sad when the artistic virtuosity of a bad ass musician is completely gone from modern rock and most music of today.  Is it because those bands or musicians cant solo?  Is it because they feel the modern audience doesn’t want a solo?  I cant figure it out?

Im a huge fan of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Doors and The Beatles.  All Hall of Fame bands!  I always looked forward to the really cool Guitar/Keys solo in almost every song!  Its called IMPROVISATION and most bands of today have no clue when it comes to that!  At the SDMA’s the one time there was a guitar solo it was a sound solo not a melodic solo (loud distorted guitar muted notes played sloppily and loud over rocking out band).  When this sloppy guitar solo did happen the crowd cheered and all the cameramen came up to take a pic of the soloist, so it does seem the crowd is eager for a solo!  This drives me crazy!

Im not saying that all of the bands that played at the SDMA’s are bad, Im just saying I watched hours of music that didn’t include something that should be in Rock music and is part of the equation for almost every great Rock song out there!

I do feel the San Diego Music Awards could have some changes to make them a better music awards. I could not believe that there isn’t a R&B genre?? This genre is one of the top 5 genres in the world! If James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Al Green or Stevie Wonder were an up and coming artist here in San Diego there would not be a category for them!

There is a huge musical gap left out when this genre is not in the mix. I was told that Hip Hop included rap, urban and R&B? That just doesn’t make sense to me? There is Cover Band, Rock, Hard Rock and Alternative genres though? I feel these decisions are made because the people that make up the academy are not into those genres ( Hip Hop, R&B ) of music.
Which is ok with me . . . but they do need to find people that are into those genres to make a proper category and a legitimate vote for that genre to make the SDMA’s more legitimate.

Overall I had a great time at the SDMA’s! Met some really cool people and made some really good contacts! Soul Child Music plans on having more nominations next year.
